Energy giant bp has reached a key milestone by initiating gas production from Phase 1 wells of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project. The extracted gas is now transported to the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. Located on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, GTA stands out as one of Africa’s most ambitious offshore projects, exploiting resources located at depths of up to 2,850 meters.

This first production marks a defining moment for the two countries involved. The GTA project, in full operation, could transform Mauritania and Senegal into a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) production hub. This development is part of a strategy aimed at exploiting the region’s significant gas resources, while meeting growing global energy demand.

bp supervises all operations on behalf of its partners, Kosmos Energy, PETROSEN and SMH. Phase 1 of the project should enable annual production of approximately 2.3 million tonnes of LNG. This volume reinforces the site’s potential to play a crucial role in the global energy market.
