The little beer with colleagues after work, the afterwork in the industrial zone, the bucket at the neighbor's on the way home…
For many Vendéens, the end of the day ends with a drink. Just what you need to “erase the difficulties of the day” and brighten up the end of the evening. Except that the “little bump” on the return journey is the cause of one in two deaths on the roads of Vendée.
At the start of the year, the 2024 figures have fallen. With 50 road deathsVendée ranks at the top of the most dangerous departments in the Pays de la Loire region.
“The main cause is alcohol at 45%,” the authorities are alarmed. “A scourge of Vendée”, far ahead of speed (13%) or refusals of priority (11%).
The gendarmerie has sketched the typical portrait of the alcoholic user who kills himself on our roads. It is abouta 35 year old man who resides in Vendée. Alone in his vehicle, he died early in the evening, near his home.
Very often, we kill ourselves near our homes.
2,600 driving under the influence of alcohol
Another local particularity, the addictive behaviors (alcohol and narcotics) are present in 34% of accidents. Of the 4,300 addictive behaviors noted by the gendarmes, 2,600 concerned alcohol. Despite the 2,300 license retentions in 2024, these figures remain stable.
“It’s cultural,” regrets Captain Alcasou. “Despite the excess, we tend to get behind the wheel because we don't live far away and we know the road by heart. It is not because you are close to your home that the risk is reduced. Our figures even prove the opposite. »
Except that this message is inaudible to drivers used to teasing the breathalyzer. Also, the authorities have decided to change the target for prevention.
“We are now counting on all reasonable peoplein families, friends, colleagues, to save lives,” insists Captain Alcasou, in tune with the Road Safety slogan: “When you care about someone, you hold them back. »
Addictive driving: what are the risks?
Driving under the influence of alcohol results in a fine when the driver displays a level between 0.25 mg and 0.39 mg/liter of exhaled air. Driving becomes criminal from 0.40 mg/liter of exhaled air. It results in a retention of your driving license for three to five days. The measure is followed by an administrative suspension of one to six months. Under the influence of drugs, the suspension lasts for six months. Additional penalties may be imposed by the courts, or even increased, with cancellation of the driving license and ban on driving. Without forgetting the impoundment of the vehicle for seven days which can be extended by the magistrates, and the vehicle alienated in the most serious cases.
