In Montenegro, a small Balkan country, at least 10 people were killed in a mass shooting on Wednesday.

According to Reuters and other media, a man opened fire Wednesday afternoon in a restaurant in a small town in the west of the country.

The man then went to three other locations and continued shooting. Among the dead were a bar owner and his two children. Four people were seriously injured.

The 45-year-old attacker, who fled, attempted suicide near his home after being arrested by the police. His death was later confirmed.

The motives and details of the incident have not been specified. However, the police believe that the suspect consumed a lot of alcohol and that a fight broke out, followed by gunshots.

Wednesday’s incident is the second shooting in Montenegro in three years. An attacker had already killed 10 people, including two children, in 2022, before being shot dead by a passerby.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic said authorities would consider toughening criteria for owning and carrying firearms.

President Jakov Milatovic said on social media that he was “shocked and stunned” and “stricken with sadness at the loss of innocent lives.”
