Russian attack in kyiv leaves one dead and seven injured

An attack by the Russian army in kyiv on Wednesday left two dead and six injured, including two pregnant women. The attack involved 111 drones.

Two people were killed and six injured in kyiv by an attack by the Moscow army. The Russians launched a wave of 111 drones on Ukraine for New Year’s Day.

This strike on the first day of the year 2025 comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed the day before, in his wishes, let this be the year of negotiations that will “put an end to the war”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened, at the end of December, to strike the center of kyiv in response to the use of American and British long-range weapons on Russian territory.

“After the morning attack, the number of victims in kyiv increased: two dead, six injured, four people saved”Ukrainian emergency services said on Telegram.

One of the victims was killed in the Pechersk district, in the historic city center of the capital, where a fire broke out in a residential building and an administrative building, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

It would be the roof of the building of the Ukrainian National Bank, according to the latter, located approximately three hundred meters from the presidential offices.

The fire was started by debris from drones shot down by air defense, according to kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, while journalists from theAFP heard multiple and powerful detonations in the city center of the capital on Wednesday morning.

Fighting “at the negotiating table”

Other people were injured in the Svyatoshin district on the outskirts of kyiv, where a tramway track and cars were set on fire, according to the mayor.

For its part, the Ukrainian Air Force claims to have shot down 63 drones of the 111 that Russia sent to Ukraine, mainly Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones and “other types of drones.”

Still according to this source, 76 were lost and disappeared from radars, either thanks to Ukrainian jammers or on their own, without “adverse consequences”, and two others returned to Russia and Belarus.

Although this attack left people injured in the Ukrainian capital, it targeted a large part of the country.the drones having been shot down in the northeast, north, southeast and south of the country, according to the air force.

In his old wishes, Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine must, for the year 2025, to fight “on the battlefield” but above all at the “negotiation table” for peace, believing that this coming year would be “the year of Ukraine”.

In his New Year’s speech on Tuesday, the Russian president Vladimir Putin did not explicitly mention the war in Ukraine, but declared that “the thoughts and hopes of relatives and friends, of millions of people across Russia, are with our fighters and our commanders.”

The latter had promised more “destruction” to Ukraine on December 22 while kyiv had struck, the previous day, a building in Kazan, in central Russia, around 1000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. (tib/ats)
