Only a few hours left before it closes its doors, Jardin Albert-1is. That's it, the Christmas market in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) is coming to an end, this Wednesday 1is January 2025. After more than a month of back and forth, the time to take stock has come. Testimonials.
More sales than last year?
On December 23, news Nice interviewed a few craftsmen for an initial assessment on Christmas Eve. Sales results for the weekend of 21 – 22? Little or no increase, even to the great astonishment of some.
A week later, the observation remains the same: the Christmas market mainly attracted the first two weeks. The crowd then died down. Elise, from the Santon de Provence stand, dates the drop to the day after the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany.
Despite everything, Aubagnaise claims to have had “more sales than last year”. “This year, it’s the nursery revolutionshe rejoices. People tell me they want to perpetuate traditions, keep heritage.” This Tuesday again, customers came by to complete their collection of figurines.
Stands with slightly high prices
However, it is not the craft stands that attract the most, even if their increase is welcomed by all.
In second place are activities for children, the price of which is a little too high, however, passers-by recognize. This is the case for Véronique. He still had to pay 20 euros so that her granddaughter can enjoy half an hour on the trampoline and routes of all kinds.
Firstly, the catering. From one stand to another, the results vary. Behind the Tassinca counter, Leïla and Jérémy sell Corsican products. Leïla noticed that the “average basket has decreased. There, they ask me for slices whereas before, it was a whole sausage.” It is therefore difficult for them to say that sales have “exploded.” It remained quiet.”
“The small tray for 10 euros, it’s true that it’s a little expensive,” notes Audrey, who came from Menton with her partner Marc and their two children.
Human warmth and sunshine
The “warm, reassuring” atmosphere compensates for the expense. “And it’s much better than the one in Menton,” says the mother frankly.
“People tell us that we have a nice Christmas marketthat they will come back,” confirms Kathy, from the Rooftop by Piramyde stand. “And the sun helps the traders a lot: we haven’t had any rain.”
Same words, one stand further away. “The weather was beautiful every day”attests Audrey, from Chalet Alsacien. If the prices are a little high, the customers have not stopped stopping. “Some people are perhaps slowing down a little, and yet our prices are lower than next door. But in any case, we even had more people than other years.”
2024 was therefore “a great vintage”, summarizes Fanny, a loyal trader at the Christmas market for 23 years.
Morgane, a passerby, promises to come back “as long as entry is free”. Let’s hope until next year, then!
