This new strong opposition comes as OpenAI faces growing resistance. Meta, Mark Zuckerberg's company, has already sided with Elon Musk by asking the California attorney general to block this transition.

Mark Zuckerberg's company notably accuses OpenAI of wanting to “flout the law” by reappropriating assets developed as a charitable organization to achieve potentially considerable private profits. For its part, OpenAI justifies its transformation by capital needs exceeding all initial forecasts. The company, valued at $157 billion, has already raised $6.6 billion last October.

This controversy is part of a broader context of concerns about the development of AI. Hinton himself recently estimated that there was “a 10 to 20 percent chance” that AI could lead to human extinction within the next three decades.

Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI who left the company in 2018, notably accuses the company of having been “deceived” during its creation. OpenAI responded by publishing internal exchanges suggesting that Musk himself would have encouraged this restructuring, provided he had majority control.
