Sophie Ellis-Bextor revealed she did over 100 shoots following the release of the 2023 film Salt burn.
The singer’s 2001 disco-pop hit ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ was used in the NSFW final scene of the comedy/psychological thriller in which lead actor Barry Keoghan danced naked. The song went viral on TikTok earlier this year and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Ellis-Bextor’s first Top 10 appearance on the chart since 2007.
The song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in January and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Global 200. She previously responded to the song’s cover by calling it a “spectacular” moment.
While appearing on BBC Breakfast earlier today (December 31) in front of her New Year’s disco On tonight’s TV show, the singer explained how the cover of her song led to her performing over 100 shows this year.
“There were some things I knew I would do this year and there were so many things I didn’t expect. I think there’s a lot to think about. I’ve never done so many shows in my life. I’ve done about 110 shows this year,” she said (via Music news).
She continued: “It’s not just me, it’s my whole group and my team. Amazing. There were some real highlights. It’s an amazing thing to get to this point in my career and still be doing things, a new excitement. I just really wanted to get a hold of it. And that is also part of it.
Talk to ZikNation in early 2024, Ellis-Bextor said she had “nothing at all” in terms of notoriety or success in America until Salt burn. “That’s what was quite extraordinary,” she explained. “For them, it’s a new song, and it’s crazy.
“It didn’t do anything the first time, and that’s okay with me.” If I’ve learned anything along the way, it’s to go where the momentum is.
She continued: “The glamor of being big in America would have meant a lot of time away, and I’d rather go where things are already happening. I really had a blast with the first record in Latin America and Southeast Asia and all those places – but if it ends up being something that takes me there now, let’s see what happens.
Ellis-Bextor will host her New Year’s Eve disco concert tonight (December 31), where she will perform 2025 with a track on BBC One and iPlayer at 11:30 p.m. (GMT).
Speaking about her performance tonight, the singer shared: “New Year’s Eve is a big deal and I don’t take it lightly if people choose to spend it with us, so I want to make sure we let’s try to create the ultimate New Party of the year. Sometimes you think about the year that has gone by and there is so much pressure with resolutions and going into January. I just want to give that last push to escapist fun.
Elsewhere, Ellis-Bextor recently released a new single titled “Freedom Of The Night” and announced a UK tour for next year. Find remaining tickets here.
Last April, “Murder On The Dancefloor” ranked number three on the list of the biggest British songs of 2024 so far.
