From January 1, 2025, technical inspection becomes compulsory for certain two-wheelers, three-wheelers and motorized quadricycles. The owners concerned have only a few days left to comply with this new regulation, under penalty of sanctions.
Which vehicles must pass the technical inspection?
Since April 15, 2024, this obligation has gradually applied to category L vehicles, depending on their date of entry into circulation:
- Before 2017 (put into circulation before April 15) : control between April 15 and August 14, 2024.
- Before 2017 (put into circulation after April 15) : deadline until December 31, 2024.
- Registered in 2017, 2018, 2019 : control to be carried out in 2025.
- Registered in 2020 and 2021 : deadline set for December 31, 2026.
Exceptions : collector vehicles put into circulation before 1960 and competition motorcycles approved by the French Motorcycling Federation are not affected by this obligation.
How does the technical inspection take place?
Owners must go to an approved center with their registration certificate. The cost of the inspection varies between 60 and 90 euros, depending on the region.
Three types of results are possible:
- Favorable (A) : the vehicle is in good condition, valid for 3 years.
- Unfavorable (S) : major failures require repairs followed by a second inspection.
- Unfavorable (R) : critical failures make the vehicle dangerous, its use is prohibited until repaired.
In the event of an unfavorable result, the counter-visit must be carried out within 2 months.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
Failure to carry out the technical inspection on time exposes the owner to a fixed fine of 135 euros, which can reach 750 euros in the event of an increase. In addition, the authorities can temporarily withdraw the registration document until regularization.
Don't delay in making an appointment
As the deadline approaches, the control centers risk being saturated. Think ahead to avoid finding yourself in violation at the start of next year.
