In view of New Year's Eve, the prefectures of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin have banned sale, possession, transportation and use from most firecrackers and fireworks, except for licensed professionals.
Questioned by RTL, Thierry Queffélec, the prefect of Haut-Rhin, regretted this decree, in force until January 3 in his department. “We obviously fear to break classical traditions. The use of pyrotechnics is rather festive. But these sometimes do not have the right use,” he said.
The prefect particularly hopes that the incidents of previous years will not be repeated. “We have already had hands torn off. There have also been eyes that have been injured. And often, these are weapons against the police and a mortar shot can injure someone. We want to avoid that while we want to celebrate the transition from one year to the next,” he added.
While fourteen people have been arrested in the last two days in the vicinity of Strasbourg after “incidents”, violence and damage, the prefect also indicated that the security system could be “alourdi” in case of “voltages”.
