As in previous years, a major security system is being put in place in Marseille and Bouches-du-Rhône for New Year's Eve.

In total, 900 police officers and gendarmes will be mobilized in the department.

These are in total “ 900 police officers, gendarmes and soldiers from the Sentinel force” who are thus mobilized to guarantee security during New Year’s Eve.

They will be “mobilized through a visible physical presence, dissuasive and widespread around gathering places, stations and public transport and on main roads” specifies the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters.

Three areas of intervention

This strengthening of the police presence targets three strategic areas. First of all, part of the police will be responsible for “preventing acts of delinquency and urban violence“. They will be supported by CRS units deployed in so-called “sensitive” areas.

In addition, teams will be positioned on the main roads in the department in order to control motorists in particular to combat driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Finally, a specific system for anticipating anyterrorist threatwill be put in place, with reinforced patrols “around the festive places”.
