Hunters of France: create your SIA account before January 1st to stay in compliance and simplify the management of your weapons!
“Remember, January 1st will be too late.” This message concerns all French hunters. From this date, any weapons holder not registered in the Weapons Information System (SIA) will be in violation. This legal obligation, in place since 2022, modernizes and centralizes the management of firearms, guaranteeing their traceability.
Why is this mandatory?
With nearly 5.7 million gun owners in France, hunters represent a majority of this community. The SIA account is essential to continue acquiring, selling, transferring or repairing your weapons. This system also aims to strengthen the fight against illegal detentions, a priority for public security.
A simple but essential approach
Creating an SIA account only takes a few minutes. Go to sia.detenteurs.interieur.gouv.fr, enter your information and that of your weapons. If technical difficulties arise, the prefectures, gunsmiths, and departmental hunting federations offer their help.
Please note: smooth-bore weapons acquired before 2011 are exempt from this obligation, although their declaration is recommended to simplify possible future transactions or controls.
What are the benefits for hunters?
Beyond legal regularization, the SIA offers simplified management: reporting loss, theft, or change of address in a few clicks. For international travel, a European digital card facilitates administrative procedures. Finally, this system improves communication with prefectures, eliminating long paper procedures.
A measure for safety and responsible practice
The SIA strengthens the traceability of weapons, reducing the risks of illegal possession or trafficking. This state-supervised system is part of modern, responsible and sustainable hunting, promoting a passion practiced in compliance with the laws. So get to your keyboards!
