Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE), indicated that she wanted to “modernize” the off-peak hours system.

– News regarding the electricity bill. The off-peak/peak hours option goes “ gradually change » from mid-2025, Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), announced this Sunday, December 29. Modifications designed to better fit the “ consumption peaks »she explained during an interview with France Info.

“At the CRE, we are attached to off-peak hours, we want to position them better, because some are poorly located, around 7-8 a.m. or around 5-6 p.m.,” developed Emmanuelle Wargon. Off-peak hours generally last 8 hours per day and are set locally by Enedis, the electricity distribution network manager. For around 60% of customers, they are concentrated only during nighttime hours, between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

“We must ensure that off-peak hours remain advantageous. Today you need 30% of your consumption during off-peak hours for it to become attractive,” continued Emmanuelle Wargon. In fact, the peak/off-peak package is much more expensive than the so-called basic package, as reported by the energy supplier EDF. Thus, subscribers, to reduce the cost of their bill, must have programmable household appliances, a water tank or even an electric vehicle.

Off-peak hours in the afternoon?

The CRE wishes to create additional off-peak hours in the afternoon, particularly in summer, and adapt the network to the charging of electric vehicles. Once the system has been readjusted, each individual will be informed by their energy supplier of the new arrangements, said the senior official.

Furthermore, the regulated electricity price should fall by 14% from February 2025, according to a decree published this Saturday, December 28. With the end of the price shield, offset by the cancellation of the increase in the electricity tax, households benefit from a greater reduction than expected, going from 9% to 14%.
