Destiny Udogie was injured on Sunday against Wolves for Tottenham in the Premier League.
Wolves took the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 29 after just seven minutes, but Spurs equalized four minutes later with Rodrigo Bentancur stunning Tim Sherwood with his goal.
Brennan Johnson then put the home side ahead just before halftime after Son Heung-min missed a controversial penalty.
However, the second half got off to the worst possible start for Ange Postecoglou’s side as Udogie was forced off the field with a hamstring injury.
And speaking on Sky Sports News’ Gillette Soccer Special (4.12pm, December 29), Sherwood said: “The bad news is Udogie is gone, it looks like he’s had a really bad recovery with a hamstring injury.
“It’s too many muscle injuries that they are having at the moment at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I don’t know what they do during the week but too many muscle injuries.”
Tim Sherwood shocked as Destiny Udogie forced to leave for Tottenham
Postecoglou is already dealing with an unprecedented number of injuries in north London, with Ben Davies recently suffering a major setback.
Therefore, the last thing the Australian needs is another key defender to be sidelined for an extended period. However, it appears that is exactly what is happening.
Based on the way Udogie reacted as he limped against Wolves, it doesn’t seem like this was a short layoff.
While it’s always difficult to judge an injury based solely on the player’s reaction, hamstring injuries are generally quite damaging, as Micky van de Ven has discovered on several occasions.
As a result, Postecoglou and Udogie won’t be too optimistic about this latest setback.
And with options in the team already so limited, if it comes to a serious injury, it looks like Daniel Levy could be forced to take out the checkbook in January.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been ordered to leave the club after what happened before the Wolves game.
