The “Vision Senegal 2050” project has sparked strong reactions within the Senegalese political class and public opinion. According to Dr Yoro Dia, journalist and former minister spokesperson for the presidency, this project is nothing more than a simple plagiarism of the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE). Although he recognizes the desire to do well on the part of the new leaders, he criticizes the way in which they go about it, highlighting a lack of clear strategic vision.

In a notable intervention this Sunday during the Jano-bi program on Sud FM, Dr Yoro Dia estimated that the current government, led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, is failing to meet the expectations of the Senegalese people. According to him, instead of focusing on a general policy declaration to define a clear vision of the country’s development, Sonko would have dwelled on unnecessary details.

At the heart of his analysis, Dr Dia recalled that the absolute priority for Senegal remains the economy. In a context of high inflation and still fragile economic growth, the need for a coherent and ambitious plan to meet economic challenges is becoming more and more pressing. “The economic question must be the main engine of our development,” he insisted.

If the “Vision Senegal 2050” was presented as an alternative for development, many wonder if this project will be able to overcome the criticisms it raises to embody a true vision of progress. For Dr Yoro Dia, the real challenge lies in the ability of leaders to define a roadmap which puts the economy at the center of priorities and which meets the expectations of citizens, particularly young people.

The debate on the future of Senegal therefore continues to continue, in a context where the question of governance and economic priorities seems more crucial than ever for the country.
