Meeting today as a permanent commission, the Réunion Region deeply regrets the decision of the Departmental Council, announced in a letter dated December 26, 2024, to withdraw from the system which was supported jointly by the 2 communities and which makes it possible to maintain an accessible price for the gas bottle. This disengagement by the Department no longer makes it possible to maintain the price of a gas bottle at €15. The Réunion Region deplores this withdrawal and decides, for its part, to continue its commitment.
This unilateral withdrawal, occurring in a context marked by persistent poverty and economic difficulties for a majority of Reunionese families, is a regrettable act. This decision, which breaks with the principles of solidarity, risks worsening the situation of the most vulnerable on our island, in particular the elderly for whom the department is supposed to provide care.
Faced with this situation, the permanent commission of the Réunion Region voted today to renew the regional system, taking into account the disengagement of the Department. Thanks to this strong commitment from the Region, the price of the gas bottle will now be limited to €18 instead of its actual cost of around €21, offering relief to Reunion households during this difficult period.
The Réunion Region recalls that this system constitutes an essential measure to preserve the purchasing power of the most vulnerable families and to cope with the constant rise in the cost of living.
The Réunion Region deplores the Department's disengagement in this initiative which required inter-community solidarity in the service of the population. It also calls on the State to intervene, particularly with oil companies, to support the regional community in its efforts in favor of the most precarious.
The Department's attempt at an explanation is riddled with untruths and fools no one.
The Réunion Region remains fully mobilized to meet the expectations of Réunion Islanders, and reaffirms its commitment to guaranteeing their access to basic necessities.
