According to Citepa (Interprofessional Technical Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies), greenhouse gas emissions in France increased by 0.5% in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year. .
This is the first increase observed since 2021. This rebound is mainly attributed to the construction and transport sectors. While 2023 marked a significant decline in emissions, with a drop of 5.8% compared to 2022, the year 2024 shows signs of slowing down in the reduction of emissions. Indeed, over the first nine months, emissions decreased by 2.4%, a figure significantly lower than the 6% drop recorded over the same period in 2023.
Citepa emphasizes that the trend over the last twelve months indicates a decrease of 3.1%, although these data are provisional and do not include the absorption of CO2 by carbon sinks such as forests and soils, important for achieve France’s climate objectives.
In 2021, a notable increase of 6.4% was recorded, mainly due to the post-Covid recovery. However, without reaching such figures, 2024 seems to be less favorable in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This situation poses a new challenge for the government, while the fight against global warming remains an essential priority.
