Panama, 98% of energy from renewable sources in November

In November 2024, renewable energy sources accounted for 97.66% of electricity production in Panama, according to data from the National Dispatching Center, the Ministry of Energy indicated.

The numbers in detail – Hydroelectric plants top the ranking, with 88.3%, followed by photovoltaic (6%) and wind power (1.86%). The contribution of technologies such as natural gas, with 2.88%, and sources with a smaller participation, such as gas oil and diesel, reaffirms the diversification of the Panamanian energy matrix. According to the ministry's note, these figures reflect Panama's commitment to sustainable development and compliance with its international climate goals, including the United Nations' sustainable development goals.

The Panamanian market – The numbers from the Ministry of Energy certify a very interesting situation for the main players in the sector. Notably, Panama's state-owned electricity transmission company, Etesa, received 42 bids from 29 companies in the latest electricity supply tender. Most of the proposals, which must meet the requirements for electricity distributors Ensa, Edemet and Edechi, came from hydroelectric generators followed by operators of diesel-fired plants. Bids were also submitted for solar and wind energy, as well as a bid from natural gas power producer Generadora Gatún. After an evaluation phase, the relevant agreements will be stipulated; the contracts will be valid from 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2030.
