Switzerland and the European Union have reached a material agreement on bilateral III.

This was stated today by the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during a press conference in Bern.

The Valais federal councilor and German politicians expressed their mutual appreciation for the objective achieved, calling it “historic”. The negotiations were officially launched on 18 March in Brussels by the President of the Confederation and the President of the European Commission.

Amherd stated in front of the media that the result achieved is the fruit of hard work and constitutes an important step towards the stabilization and further development of bilateral relations. The negotiating teams have managed to find balanced solutions, which are in the interests of both sides, he added.

The two sides praised the great effort put into the nine-month negotiation process. Today, Amherd and von der Leyen also made it known that they also discussed the next procedural steps in Switzerland, more precisely the discussions in Parliament and the vote at the polls.

The parties also discussed the global context in which Switzerland and the EU govern their bilateral relations. In this regard, issues such as the growing influence of autocratic and protectionist ideas, the multiplication of conflicts and the fragmentation of the world order were raised.

In view of the current geopolitical challenges, Amherd and von der Leyen reiterated the importance of mutual cooperation.
