Weather: Italy divided in two at Christmas

We are moving towards a Very different Christmas compared to recent years, at least for some of our regions. For some time now we have been accustomed to Christmas holidays under the influence ofhigh pressurewhich often led exceptionally high temperatures for the period. In the last 5 years, many locations in the Central-South they even surpassed the 20 °C between 24 and 25 December, a situation that is unlikely to be repeated this year.

The hypothesis of one is gaining ground more and more strong arctic cold wave between 23 and 25 December, ready to catapult Italy into the middle of winter. This river of cold air coming from Northern Europe will mainly affect the regions Adriatic and those of Southern Italybringing the major ones instabilityi stronger winds and a significant heat drop.

Il Northern Italyhowever, will find itself on the fringes of this cold wave thanks to the protection offered by thealpine arch. Between December 23rd and 24th, the cold will be more evident during the night and in the very early hours of the morning, but the sky will remain clear or slightly cloudy almost everywhere.

A completely different matter applies to the Middle-Lower Adriatic and the Southern Italywhere, after the passage of cold front scheduled for December 23rd, the isolation of a cold core at high altitude between Christmas Eve and December 25th. It will not be a nucleus of freezing air capable of bringing snowfall to the plains, but it will still bring widespread instability. Between December 24th and 25th, we expect precipitation up Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria e Sicily.

It is still too early to accurately assess the exact snow levelbut with good probability i white flakes could reach quotas of medium-high hill along the Middle-Lower Adriatic e di low mountain or high hill nell’Far South. This configuration could give a Snowy Christmas to many mountain and hilly locations, an event that had not occurred for several decades.

For the Northern Italy and the Middle-Upper Tyrrhenian SeaInstead, Christmas is on its way stable and sunnybut in a context cold at night.
