YB still hasn't left the bottom of the Champions League standings. Destroyed 5-1, the Bernese took to the water in Stuttgart and suffered a 6th setback in a row in the competition. And this despite having opened the scoring in the 5th by Lakomy.
This new defeat definitively bury YB's already stunted hopes of finishing among the top 24 in the league phase. However, before the 5 German goals, hope had almost surfaced in the south of Germany.
Because it was the Yellow and Black who scored first and cooled down a stadium filled with 60,000 spectators, including several hundred Bernese fans. Served behind by Alan Virginius, Lukasz Lakomy chose the right moment to unlock his counter this season, with a long shot which left goalkeeper Alexander Nübel on his line (6th). The Polish midfielder then paid a beautiful tribute to his teammate Meschack Elia, struck on Tuesday by the tragic death of one of his two young sons.
A contentious goal
With his advantage in his pocket, YB started to fall back and quickly cracked, in the 25th minute. A one-two between Angelo Stiller and Josha Vagnoman pierced a Bernese rearguard whose nightmare was only just beginning.
And since nothing is definitely going the way of the Bernese in this disastrous European campaign, they have had to deal with a fairly contentious arbitration decision. In the 53rd minute, everyone saw the assistant referee raise his flag, believing that the ball had gone out of bounds. But the main referee not having blown the whistle, ex-YB Fabian Rieder continued his action and served the Frenchman Enzo Millot. The latter did not need to be asked to score the 2-1, between several Bernese players at a standstill.
Two assists for Rieder
Stunned by the VAR's decision to award the goal – the ball obviously not having completely crossed the line – Joël Magnin's troop sank. Rieder took the opportunity to deliver another assist on Führich's 3-1 (61st), before Vagnoman (66th) and Keitel (75th) added to the score.
With no points collected in 6 matches, 22 goals conceded and only 3 scored, YB is 36th and last in the ranking. He has two matches left to play in January – in Glasgow against Celtic and in Bern against Red Star – to avoid zero points.
