Between 2013 and 2024, package prices fell by 9% for individuals, despite widespread inflation. An accentuated decline between 2023 and 2024, during which prices fell by 5%. The price of a fixed plan (internet/telephone) reaches on average 33 euros in 2023, when the price of a mobile plan rises to 14 euros. A situation which makes French prices “the most competitive in Europe”, notes the FFT.
This drop in prices is accompanied by an increase in data consumption in 2023, the French consume on average 17 gigabytes (GB) per month, compared to 14.3 GB the previous year. The price of a gigabyte consumed has thus automatically fallen by 68% in France between 2019 and 2023.
When it comes to business offerings, prices have followed a similar trajectory, with an average increase in mobile data consumption of 22% per year between 2018 and 2022 and an average annual price decline of 7% over the same period. . Operator investments have continued to decline since 2021, after a period of strong growth that began in 2015.
13.8 billion euros of investments
In 2023, French operators spent 13.8 billion euros on investments in telecoms networks, compared to 14.9 billion in 2021. A level described as “exceptional” by the FFT.
Laurent Halimi, president of the federation, pointed to an “unsustainable economic situation” due to low prices and investments, “in a context of accelerating digital transition and strong tax and regulatory pressure”.
