The holiday season in Quebec comes with many traditions, but some are more divisive than others, like the famous fruit cake. Adored by many, hated by others, this candied fruit dessert leaves no one indifferent, not even the City of Laval.
On November 26, a real friendly battle of memes broke out online. For a few days, pages of humorous content like News in memes, Harmless nonos memes, Memes and words, and many others joined in the fun by sharing images illustrating their position on the great fruitcake controversy.
For or against? Opinions were quite clear-cut.
Then, multiple social media managers from companies or organizations intervened to add their two cents.
This is the case of the City of Laval which commented: “We take this opportunity to remind our citizens that fruitcake CANNOT be placed in the brown bin since it is not an organic material. It must be taken to the ecocenter, where it will be treated as a dangerous product. »
Clearly, she chose her side.
On November 29, the City changed its profile image to a photo of a fruit cake, which caused many people to react.

The City of Longueuil refused the proposal! “That’s NO. Please provide us with a new profile image. »

While one person wrote that it was a cake from 5 years ago that would have survived, the City of Laval responded without embarrassment: “It seems that archaeologists found one from 200 years old in perfect condition.

Then, the City of Sherbrooke “entered the chat” by stating: “A recent study showed that fruitcake was the most given gift during the holiday season. In any case, if we receive one, we give it back you-continue…»
To which Laval added: “This same study proved that in 99% of cases, the cake offered was itself the result of a donation. So you corroborate the research…”
On the Bluesky network, which has experienced dazzling popularity recently, Hydro-Québec also got involved at the request of Internet users. “We are sorry. We were in an intensive session with our psychologist after being exposed to so many fruitcake photos, including from @lactumemes.bsky.social,” the electricity supplier wrote to explain its delay in joining the part.
Moreover, Hydro-Québec had already created quite a buzz in 2021 about fruit cake when the company commented on Twitter (now X): “There is a time and a place to enjoy this delight: never and in the drains. It’s so dense that we could use it for our dams.” This tweet received hundreds of comments and reactions.
Obviously, fruitcake is a delicate subject, to be handled with as much care as a sharp knife, if you want to avoid turning your family dinner into a veritable national debate.
