Qatar will supply three million tonnes of gas per year to China under the terms of an agreement with London-based Shell, the emirate's state-owned energy company announced on Monday. Deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will begin in January 2025 as planned by a “new long-term sales and purchase agreement”QatarEnergy said in a statement, without revealing the precise duration of the agreement.

“We are pleased to enter into this new long-term agreement with our partner, Shell. This agreement helps meet the demands of Shell's customers in China and strengthens our contribution to meeting customer needs around the world.”said Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi, who is also the CEO of QatarEnergy, in the statement. Qatar is one of the world's leading LNG producers, alongside the United States, Australia and Russia.

Asian countries, along with China, Japan and South Korea, are the main market for Qatari gas, but demand has also increased in European countries since Russia's war against Ukraine affected Russian supplies . In recent years, Qatar has entered into other long-term LNG supply agreements with Total (), Shell, Petronet (India) and Eni (Italy), among others, most of which have a duration of 27 years . A first agreement was concluded in 2022 with Sinopec (China).
