Anse: 5,000 m² go up in smoke in a commercial zone

More than 80 firefighters and 32 engines were mobilized on Monday, November 25, to contain a major fire which broke out in a Saint-Romain commercial area, located in Anse, along the A6 motorway.

It was also a motorist traveling on the highway who raised the alarm shortly after 2:30 p.m., noticing thick black smoke. The fire apparently started from an indoor sports area, of around 2,000 m², before spreading to other premises, all closed this Monday afternoon.

Around forty residents evacuated

No casualties have been reported, but around forty residents of the neighboring area had to be evacuated. The supermarket located near the scene of the disaster was also closed.

The fire was contained shortly before 4 p.m., but the firefighters’ task was made difficult due to the strong wind. A wind which, however, allowed rapid dilution of the smoke.

An open investigation

In total, over the 12,000 m2 of buildings, 5,400 were affected by the flames. The firefighters remained at work until the day after the incident in order to completely extinguish the last hot spots and monitor the scene to prevent any resumption of the fire.

A blatant investigation was opened by the gendarmes. The origin of the disaster is not yet known. Tuesday, November 26, investigators were still present at the scene of the fire.
