If you watch television on Friday November 29 or Saturday November 30, 2024, you will inevitably see a logo 3637
appear, reminding you which number to dial if you want to make a donation to the AFM-Téléthon, the association which helps people suffering from neuromuscular diseases. The television marathon takes place a weekend earlier than usual – with Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral reopening the first weekend in December – and is expected to raise several million euros for research. But what is the record for donations obtained during a Telethon? Maine Libre answers you.
What is the record?
On its website, the AFM-Téléthon lists the amounts collected each year since the creation of the event. “Since the first Telethon in 1987, the generosity of donors has never wavered”recalls the association. In 1987, for the first edition, €29,650,000 was collected.
The record arrived in 2006. The various activities and individual donations made it possible to obtain €106,696,532. Since then, the counter has only fallen below 80 million euros once, it was in 2020, the year of Covid-19, with €77,298,024. In 2023, the association had collected €92,905,533 at the national level while in Sarthe, more than €620,000 had been collected. What will be the amount displayed on the meter at the end of Telethon 2024? Answer Saturday evening.
What are donations used for?
The AFM-Téléthon supports research into neuromuscular diseases but also helps patients and their families with their daily lives, from the diagnosis of the disease to the adaptation of housing or employment.
