Qnap has pulled a software update for its NAS devices after it caused problems for users. Some users now have to manually reinstall their operating system, while others are facing bigger issues and can't even log in.
Qnap launched an unstable version of its QTS operating system with QTS 5.2.2.2950 build 20241114. Following user reactions, the NAS specialist withdrew this update and released a stable version within 24 hours. However, for some users, the damage was already done.
Affected devices
The original update caused issues for the following TS-x53D and TS-x51 series devices: HS-453DX, TBS-453DX, TS-251D, TS-253D, TS-653D, TS-453D, TS-453Dmini , TS-451D and TS-451D2. Several NAS functions did not work after installation.
Affected people can resolve the issues by manually reinstalling the repaired version of the NAS software. To do this, download the update from the Qnap Download Center. Then navigate to System et Firmware update to select Installation manual.
Unable to connect
Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be an option for some users. The Register reports that several customers can no longer connect to their NAS. They appear to have manually reset the device after experiencing issues with the new update. After this reset, their account details no longer work.
Qnap itself advises affected users to install the update or contact customer support. However, users in turn indicate that customer support is not very responsive at the moment. The solution for those who can no longer log in is not yet clear.
Qnap users are somewhat shaken. The manufacturer runs into bugs and vulnerabilities from time to time, and criminals are not shy about taking advantage of them. A quick fix is usually the best advice to follow, but this reasonable practice is causing the biggest problems today. Thus, user confidence in updates is seriously damaged by Qnap, which could have serious long-term consequences.
