A camera that’s still just as light, with a larger screen
The first advantage of the Insta 360 X3 is obviously its small size, which allows it to be easily taken anywhere when out and about. This action camera measures precisely 11.4 x 4.6 x 3.3 cm, compared to 11.3 x 4.6 x 2.9 cm for its predecessor One X2. And with a featherweight of 180 g, the Insta 360 X3 is one of the lightest models. And since this camera should be able to follow you during your sporting exploits on land or water, the brand has of course thought of IPX8 certification: the device can therefore be immersed in fresh water for several minutes without making the camera soul afterwards.
The other very good point of its design is its screen, much larger than the round one fitted to the previous model. Here, we are treated to a 2.29-inch color touchscreen panel, which greatly helps with framing, even if for a camera that films 360°, this is not very important. Above all, it offers users much better ergonomics for everything relating to the configuration of photo and video modes, and you can even do without the mobile application from time to time.
Very practical shooting modes
The Insta 360 X3 also integrates a 1/2″ 18 Mpx sensor, larger than that of the One X2. L’action cam can capture shots in 5952 x 2976 pixels and 11,968 x 5984 pixels by interpolation for 360 degree mode and shoot images in 5.7K at 30, 25 or 4 FPS. A so-called 4K mode (3,840 x 1,920 pixels) at 60 or 30 FPS is also included, but for real 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), you cannot go beyond 30 FPS. If this camera does not have the same appetite for high image frequencies that the action cams from GoPro for example, the 360 degree video will still be more than suitable for athletes who equip themselves with it. We still regret the absence of an Ultra HD mode at 60 Hz or even a 1080p mode at 120 FPS.
Video submodes like Active HDR, TimeLapse et TimeShift are also indeed available, as well as a multitude of functions and automatic shots which allow much more complex sequences to be produced. For example, the function Bullet Time allows you to rotate the camera above your head, next to you while you walk, or above an object.
