Denis Gougeon: Winner of the Serge-Garant Prize

Montreal, Monday November 25, 2024 — The Émile-Nelligan Foundation is pleased to announce that composer Denis Gougeon was chosen as the winner of the prestigious 2024 Serge-Garant Prize. A $25,000 scholarship was awarded to him during a ceremony which took place at the Faculty of of the University of Montreal, Monday, November 25, at 6:00 p.m.

This year’s jury consisted of violinist Olga Ranzenhofer, musicologist Ariane Couture, conductor Cristian German Gort, musician and copyist Odile Gruet and composer and winner of the 2006 Serge-Garant Prize, John Rea.

During the ceremony, the president of the jury, Olga Ranzenhofer, praised the immense contribution to Montreal, Quebec, Canadian and international musical life and the breadth of the work of the winner of the Serge-Garant Prize. “The jury highlighted the quality of Gougeon’s works, his uniqueness; Gougeon’s works are recognizable, just as we are able to recognize the works of Mozart, Beethoven or Bartók, those of Gougeon have a uniqueness, a very “Gougeonesque” color.” The recipient expressed his gratitude and said he was deeply touched to receive this honor. “However, this recognition also comes with a responsibility, that of continuing with the greatest coherence, freedom and rigor my creative work begun more than 40 years ago. »

Depending on the rules of the prize, it is awarded to a Canadian citizen born in Quebec and residing or not in Quebec, or to a Canadian citizen who was not born in Quebec, but who has resided there for at least ten years.

Musical composition is defined by these regulations as “any form of sound creation”. This prize is awarded every four years to an artist for their entire body of work, at any point in their career.

Since 1979, the ÉMILE-NELLIGAN FOUNDATION has awarded nearly $1,900,000.00 to 80 local winners working in the fields of contemporary music (Serge-Garant Prize), visual arts (Ozias-Leduc Prize) and literature (Gilles-Corbeil and Émile-Nelligan Prize).

THE ÉMILE-NELLIGAN FOUNDATION is a non-profit company, created in 1979 at the instigation of Gilles Corbeil, with a view to honoring the memory of the poet and helping the arts and letters. Gilles Corbeil, nephew of the poet, as well as other members of the family, heirs of Nelligan, agreed to establish this foundation and to transfer to it the accumulated copyright of the poet. The Foundation is administered by Michel Dallaire, honorary president, Marie-Andrée Beaudet, president, Michel Gonneville, vice-president and Marie-Michèle Cron, secretary-treasurer.
