The prefect of Drôme must both ensure respect “the exercise of the right to demonstrate” but also guarantee “public order”. He therefore takes the measures which he considers proportionate to “prevent possible disturbances on public roads“. It is therefore much more than the two Romanian demonstrations which are prohibited this Saturday. Any gathering “in connection with the commemoration of the death of Thomas PEROTTO or the recent death of Nicolas DUMAS, as well as those in reaction to these gatherings on the grounds of the fight against racism, hatred, francocide, insecurity or even immigration, are prohibited from Saturday November 30, 2024 – 8:00 a.m. to Sunday December 1 – 8:00 p.m. in Valence, Romans-sur-Isère, Bourg-de-Péage and Crépol.” Likewise, the demonstrations declared by the collective “Justice for ours”, the collective for Novels and the ASTI Novels, as well as by the CNT, on November 30 in Romans sur Isère from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. are prohibited, specifies the prefectural decree dated this Monday, November 25.
What police reinforcements?
In a letter dated November 22, the mayor of Romans-sur-Isère Marie-Hélène Thoraval asked the prefect for this ban order “of all demonstrations on Roman territory on November 30”. The chosen one feared a “important mobilization going well beyond the framework of the city of Romans”. Marie-Hélène Thoraval said this Monday that she was satisfied to have been heard, but she now fears that certain small groups will not respect this ban and will still travel to Romans.
