Accumulation of functions for the Minister of Sports: which position should Walid Sadi cede?

In the corridors of the Ministry of Sports and the Algerian authorities, a legal debate is intensifying around the career of Walid Sadi. Newly appointed minister, president of the Algerian Football Federation, vice-president of the North African Football Union (UNA) and candidate for the Executive Committee of the African Football Confederation, the person concerned finds himself faced with a major regulatory challenge .

Algerian legislation, through Executive Decree No. 21-60 of February 8, 2021, is unequivocal. This legal text, the result of a desire to moralize sporting institutions, establishes clear and binding principles concerning the accumulation of functions.

The legal system is precise. A sports manager cannot simultaneously occupy elective and executive positions in different structures. For Walid Sadi, this means a tough choice: minister, federation president or continental candidate, only one path will be possible.

The official text is explicit. Candidates must sign a written commitment guaranteeing their ability to resign from office within thirty days of an election. A mechanism designed to prevent conflicts of interest and preserve the integrity of the sport system.

His candidacy for the CAF Executive Committee, whose elections are scheduled for March 2025 in Cairo, adds an additional dimension to this administrative puzzle. Each function represents a different strategic issue: national political influence for the ministry, technical direction for the FAF, continental influence for the CAF.

Walid Sadi now has a regulatory deadline to make his arbitration. Each option has significant professional and strategic implications. Will he maintain his ministerial post? Will he retain the presidency of the FAF? Will he pursue his continental ambition? The countdown has begun. Thirty days to make a choice which will shape not only one’s personal trajectory, but also the image of an Algerian sport in search of modernity and transparency.
