For several years now, the energy prices in France have seen a significant increase, affecting the finances of many households. As the month of July begins, a new rising gas prices is implemented.

Despite a drop in gas prices observed by suppliers between January and June, the increase in July is maintained. From this Monday, the gas bill is expected to increase by 11.7% for the millions of households affectedwith an average benchmark price of 13 euro cents per kWh. According to the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the theoretical annual invoice gas will go from 1,060 euros in July to 1,184 euros this month.

This new increase is mainly due to the contribution of third-party access to distribution networks (ATRD), a tax representing 25 to 30% of individual gas bills. This contribution covers the maintenance costs of the gas network. It should be noted that only individuals and businesses are subject to it.

Another factor in this increase is the replacement of Russian gas by American gas, as Nicolas Leclerc, founder of the consulting firm Omnegy, explains to Capital. On average, households heated with gas will see their bill increase by 5.5%, while those who use it for cooking and hot water will see an increase of 10.4%. However, the CRE indicates that the energy suppliers can choose whether or not to pass on this increase to consumers’ bills.

CRE advice to limit the increase in gas bills

“The CRE considered it preferable, in order to reward consumers’ efforts at sobriety while covering the costs borne by suppliers, to limit the increase in the subscription in its benchmark price. Some suppliers have applied this logic and the CRE welcomes it,” we can read in the CRE press release.

However, despite this freedom granted to suppliers, “the vast majority of consumers will see this increase reflected in their bills “, according to the Energy Mediator. “The CRE invites consumers, according to their needs, to compare the different offers available using the public comparator energie-info.fr”, we can read on the website of the Energy Regulation Commission.

It is essential for consumers to be well informed about the different options available to best manage their energy expenses in the face of these price increasesComparing offers and adopting more sober consumption behaviors can help to mitigate the impact of these increases on household budgets.
