Two people have been imprisoned and a judicial investigation has been opened for an attempted murder of four BAC agents, which occurred in Noumea last May, the prosecutor announced on Sunday June 30.

The public prosecutor of Noumea (New Caledonia) announced this Sunday, June 30, the opening of a judicial investigation into an attempted voluntary homicide of four police officers from the BAC (anti-crime brigade) on May 16.

In the Rivière Salée district of Noumea, four BAC officers were in a car, searching for a vehicle potentially involved in the looting of a gun shop. They were then attacked by a man wearing a police bulletproof vest who was in the middle of a group of people.

A first shot from a shotgun hit the police vehicle, injuring two officers in the eyes. Despite his injury, the driver tried to get away, but he drove onto a road blocked by a roadblock.

The police car was therefore shot at a second time, injuring a third officer in the thigh. As for the fourth, he has no physical after-effects, but the psychological damage was “very significant”, reported the prosecutor.

Twelve people have been arrested since Wednesday, June 26, including the alleged shooter. Aged 26, he admitted the facts. Two others are suspected of complicity.

Charged on Saturday June 29 with “attempted murder of a person in authority,” he was placed in pre-trial detention.

His 23-year-old accomplice is suspected of inciting him to act. He was charged with complicity and was also placed in detention. They both face life imprisonment.

A third man, brother of the shooter, is suspected of having hidden the weapon. He was indicted for “concealing evidence of a crime” and then placed under judicial supervision.
