As the price and demand for ginger has increased in global markets, the Peruvian population has also increased their consumption of this popular food ingredient. According to Leandro Manuel Llacctarimay Figueroa, sales and operations director of Peruvian ginger producer and exporter Agroexportaciones Llacta, “the price has been increasing for four weeks, by around 0.14 cents per week.”
According to him, Peru is currently in the growth period of the new ginger harvest. “Currently, the price of FOB organic ginger at the port of Callao in Peru is $37.7 per 13.6 kg box. This is because last year there were fewer plantings than in 2022/21/20, as farmers were afraid to plant larger quantities thinking that the price would fall as happened in 2021-2022, 2020 having been a happy new year due to the pandemic Last year the prices were good, but the farmers did not want to risk their capital due to the experiences in 2021-2022 So they decided to invest in planting. of coffee, cocoa and pineapples and in improving their quality of life, by buying a truck and building their houses.
Peruvian ginger is exported all over the world. “Today, conventional and organic Peruvian ginger is exported to markets in Chile, Colombia, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, United States and the Netherlands, the latter two countries being the most exporting”, indicates Mr. Figueroa.
Figueroa says some farmers have halted the ginger harvest while waiting for better prices. “When farmers saw that prices were starting to rise, they decided to stop their harvest to wait for better prices in the following weeks. The high consumption of ginger in the Peruvian market is another factor in the price rise. main destination is the large wholesale market of Lima, from which ginger is distributed throughout Peru. In this market, the preferred variety of consumers is the jumbo variety of ginger, which is more expensive than the Criollo variety, which is. mainly exported. The price difference by kilo of jumbo ginger compared to Criollo ginger is about 0.40 cents on the dollar.”
He adds that the campaign for Peruvian ginger should end in January. “Then the new campaign will begin with exports by air in February and by sea at the end of May,” concludes Mr. Figueroa.
