This Sunday, the Swiss population must vote on four voting subjects. Among them, one has attracted a lot of attention: the widening of highways. Tension is particularly strong in French-speaking Switzerland, because of the extension of the A1 between Le Vengeron and Nyon.

A few days before the election, fronts are hardening and voices are being heard. Among them, the Vaudois comedian Yann Marguet, who is committed to “no”. On social networks, groups opposed to the project share visuals in which the Vaudois, known for his unpleasant, but not mean, outbursts, blurts out:

“What the hell would you do in Schaffhausen anyway?”

Except that the cantonal president of the Liberal-Radical Party (PLR) of Schaffhausen, Urs Wohlgemut, did not necessarily appreciate the joke. On an Instagram post, he says what he thinks of this Vaudois who comes to make fun of his canton and campaigns against the highways:

After a first image which indicates “Come visit our beautiful region of Schaffhausen”, the tone is set:

“You may know Yann Marguet, this famous comedian from Vaud. Even if his humor is appreciated, I find it inappropriate to make fun of an entire region”

Urs Wohlgemuth, PLR de Schaffhouse

He continues:

“Unfortunately, it seems to have been common for years in some urban left circles to mock people living outside of city centers, rather than seriously addressing their concerns.”

The post, notably shared by national councilor Philippe Nantermod (PLR/VS), also takes up the issue of votes: “It is important that traffic on our national roads remains fluid. This is why we support the widening of highways in order to keep bypass traffic out of our beautiful communities.”

“Diplomatic incident with Schaffhausen”? Oh no.

Contacted, Urs Wohlgemuth explains that he was disturbed by the language used and to see his region treated in this way, in a campaign which highlights the city-country divide. Yann Marguet, for his part, recalls that he grew up and spent the first eighteen years of his life in Sainte- (VD). Also:

“I have some notions of what rurality is and only allow myself to mock it with great affection”

On the phone, Urs Wohlgemuth explains that he worked twenty years ago in the canton of Vaud, in St-Prex, for Vetropack (the site closed last May) and still regularly visits friends in Rolle. “I wouldn’t allow myself to talk about the canton of Vaud like that,” he explains. Yann Marguet defends himself from any offense:

“My words were intended more as a joke testifying to my commitment to the cause of the initiators than a targeted villainy intended to create a diplomatic incident with Schaffhausen”

Schaffhausen, which is also affected by the vote, since in the package there is the creation of a second tube for the Fäsenstaub tunnel, where 30,000 vehicles pass through every day, “almost double that for the Gotthard », says Urs Wohlgemuth. Switzerland’s emblematic tunnel sees around 17,000 vehicles use it daily.

All’s well that ends well?

The president of the Schaffhausen PLR also relaunches his invitation issued on Instagram:

“I cordially invite you to Schaffhausen to admire, among other things, the beauty of the Rhine Falls and taste our wine ;)”

Urs Wohlgemuth, PLR de Schaffhouse

On the phone, he says:

“Yann Marguet can obviously come and visit us by taking the train…”

To which Yann Marguet responds:

“I accept with pleasure Mr. Wohlgemuth’s invitation to discover his region (and its wines which I have been told are highly praised)”

He adds:

“I offer him in exchange, if he is up for it of course, a discussion on the benefits of self-deprecation. Wink emoji”
