British hospitals are once again disrupted by a strike movement. Medical interns have been walking out since Thursday morning, June 27, and will continue until July 2, to demand better pay conditions.

The interns are demanding a 35% increase in their salary, to compensate for the austerity of the 2010s. Sumi Manirajan is an obstetrician and representative of the BMA union at the origin of the mobilization: “ A newly qualified doctor earns 15 £ per hour (approx. 18 €). I graduated in 2021 and I saw my colleagues, the friends I studied with, leave the country to go to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, where they are paid properly. Those who stay find themselves with even more work and burn out. »

Maintain the pressure

This is the eleventh time young doctors go on strike in less than two years. The negotiations are not moving forward. This young psychiatrist feels “ exhausted… We don’t like to strike. Our colleagues are accommodating, but we know that it adds pressure to everyone. We would like to stop, but we feel like we have no other choice. »

One week before the elections, doctors consider the promises of the major parties in terms of health to be insufficient.
