Gas: prices will jump by 11.7% on July 1, 2024

Rising gas prices are coming. Announced for a long time, it amounts to 11.7% from July 1, 2024. An increase before a lull promised by the government in the winter.

Gas prices to rise 11.7% by July 1, 2024

On July 1, 2024, the price of gas saw an average increase of 11.7% compared to June. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) publishes a benchmark price for natural gas every month, serving as a reference for consumers and suppliers. Thus, this benchmark price includes all costs. For this month, the average level reached 129.2 euros including tax per megawatt hour, or an annual bill of 1,184 euros for an average consumer. Furthermore, since the end of regulated prices in June 2023, consumers can compare different offers to optimize their bills.

Despite this notable increase, the price of gas in July remains 3.5% lower than in January 2024. Indeed, at the start of the year, the average annual bill amounted to 1,227 euros including tax. These fluctuations are explained by variations in supply costs in the wholesale market, influenced by global factors such as seasonal demand, geopolitical tensions and inventory variations.

Prices falling in winter?

Faced with these increases, CRE recommends that consumers compare the offers available on the market. Thus, it encourages using online comparators and consulting contract conditions, which can help find more advantageous rates. Additionally, adopt more economical consumption practicessuch as thermal insulation or the use of programmable thermostats, can help reduce energy bills.

The price of energy, of electricity in particular, is a key theme of the legislative campaign. To try to calm the anger, the government has just announced a drop of 15% from winter 2025. However, the measure is considered insufficient by the National Rally. Thus, the latter promises, in the event of victory, to reduce VAT from 20% to 5.5% on energy to sustainably lower French bills.
