On February 24, 2022, 1,000 days ago, the Russian army invaded Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin aimed to conquer kyiv within days. But it didn’t happen like that.

What is the progress of Russian troops in Ukraine?
To date, Russia occupies a little less than 20% of Ukrainian territoryincluding Crimea, annexed before the start of the conflict in 2014. Moscow’s main conquests are located in the east of the country, on three fronts totaling some 1,200 kilometers. These are the oblasts of Kharkiv and Sumy in the northeast, Luhansk in the east, and Zaporizhia, Odessa and Donestk (where the Donbass is located) in the south.
“We are in a progressive nibbling situation throughout Ukrainian territory, although Russian forces were unable to take control of the Black Sea. Moscow now occupies more or less 18% of Ukraine,” researcher at the Center for Security and Defense Studies Estelle Hoorickx told RTBF.
What territories do Ukrainians occupy in Russia?
Last August, Ukrainian forces launched an offensive in Russia, in the city of Kursk, but have since gradually lost ground. “In recent weeks, observes Estelle Hoorickx, Ukrainians lost about 400 square kilometers of the 1000 square kilometers that they had managed to conquer in August” in the incursion into Kursk.
What are the human losses?
In mid-September 2024, the Wall Street Journal estimated the number of Russian and Ukrainian dead and wounded in two and a half years of war at one million, with more than twice as many Russian deaths as Ukrainians.
In detail, there would be some 80,000 dead and 400,000 injured on the Ukrainian side ; et 200,000 dead and 400,000 injured on the Russian side.
