PARIS, June 24 (Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange opened mixed on Monday, as several monetary policy makers spoke and before a crucial inflation indicator on Friday.

In early trading, the Dow Jones index gained 116.70 points, or 0.30% to 39,267.03 points and the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 0.07% to 5,460.62 points.

The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.30% or 53.87 points, to 17,635.493 points.

Federal Reserve Monetary Policy Committee members Loretta Mester and Austan Goolsbee spoke Monday, two interventions with a restrictive tone.

Loretta Mester, who will retire at the end of the month, has argued for the Fed’s balance sheet to continue to shrink, which could involve selling mortgage-backed securities.

Austan Goldsbee, for his part, stressed that it would take more confidence in the trajectory of inflation to be able to lower rates.

As such, the PCE inflation indicator expected on Friday in the United States should encourage markets to be cautious this week.

The first debate of the American presidential election, which will be held on Thursday, could also liven up discussions.

In terms of values, UPS will sell its Coyote Logistics business unit to RXO for $1.025 billion, which causes RXO to jump 12.9%.
