Colin Petersen, the drummer of the pop group the Bee Gees, died on Monday at the age of 78, his loved ones announced. He had played on songs by the group that had become cult, such as “To Love Somebody” or “I started a joke”.
His heart stopped beating. Colin Petersen’s hands accompanied the “Bee Gees” group on drums in the 1960s, on the group’s flagship songs with sweet hits. The musician died this Monday at the age of 78.

His death was confirmed in a Facebook message by his current group “Best of The Bee Gees”, the name of the show in homage to the hits of Australian-British musicians. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin “Smiley” Petersen. He enriched our lives and bonded our group with love, care and respect. I don’t know how we can continue without his radiant smile and his deep friendship. We love you Colonel. Rest in peace.” The cause of death has not been specified at this time.
Colin Petersen worked on four Bee Gees albums
Nicknamed “Smiley”, Colin Petersen was the first official member of the Bee Gees not named Gibb when he joined brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice in 1966 after all four moved to London from Australia . As a drummer, he worked on four “Bee Gees” albums, and was notably featured in hits such as “I Started A Joke”, “To Love Somebody” and “I Just Gotta Get A Message To You”. , before leaving the group in the early 1970s.
Recently, he took part in the tribute show to the iconic trio “Best of the Bee Gees”, and performed on stage last Saturday in Australia. The disappearance of Colin Petersen therefore remains unexpected.
