Often acclaimed for its multiple qualities, OLED technology is constantly evolving. It proves it again on the iPad Pro M4 with the appearance of Tandem OLED technology. The latter is of interest to the entire industry and LG Display is taking the next step by starting mass production of tandem OLED panels for laptops. Previewed in 2019 from the South Korean specialist, the Tandem OLED offers – as its name suggests – the ability to work two OLED panels on top of each other. The structure is then synchronized and this approach greatly improves the capabilities of basic OLED technology.

With its new 13-inch Tandem OLED screen for laptops, LG claims double the lifespan and up to three times greater brightness than a standard OLED panel. All with 40% lower power consumption, an interesting improvement for high-end laptops.

OLED, but much better

LG Display doesn’t stop there and says it has optimized many components in the structure of the panel, achieving a screen that is 40% thinner and 28% lighter than traditional OLED screens. Its new screen has a WQXGA+ definition of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels, covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and has HDR True Black 500 certification. Compelling arguments for laptop manufacturers and the first laptops with this technology will not be long in coming. The Dell XPS 13 from 2024 is the first laptop to integrate a Tandem OLED panel and Apple could on its next MacBooks.

A test carried out by the XDA-Developers site tends to confirm the qualities of the new Tandem OLED screen of the XPS 13. Our colleague Rich Woods indicates that this machine includes “probably the best screen on a 13-inch laptop”. You have to add $400 to the base price (from $1,149) to benefit from a Tandem OLED screen.

Before arriving on PCs, Tandem OLED first convinced the automotive sector for its ease, longevity and high brightness. Indeed, cars last longer than laptops or tablets and are affected by reflections or external brightness. Even before the iPad Pro M4 or the Dell XPS 13 (2024), we were able to discover a double-layer Tandem OLED screen on the Porsche Design Honor Magic6 RSR.
