General Brice Clotaire Oligui
The new constitution wanted by General Brice Oligui’s camp was approved by a large majority during the referendum, a crucial step before a return to constitutional order.
Nearly 868,115 voters were called on Saturday to cast a green ballot for yes or red for “no” during the voting day.
According to the results, the Gabonese approved by a large majority the new constitution drafted by the military regime of General Brice Oligui Nguema with 91.8% “yes”.
This referendum is supposed to mark the penultimate step before the return to constitutional order, since the overthrow, on August 30, 2023, of President Ali Bongo Ondimba by a military coup.
The 173 articles of the new fundamental law, among other things, establish a seven-year mandate renewable only once for the President of the Republic, with a presidential regime endowed with strong executive power. Also, the new fundamental law does not provide for the position of Prime Minister and prohibits the dynastic transmission of power.
The new text provides for a position of vice-president appointed by the Head of State, and a power to dissolve the National Assembly.
The military junta, led by General Brice Oligui Nguemaau, deposed President Ali Bongo, who had barely been re-elected in August 2023, thus putting an end to the Bongo dynasty, in power since 1967.
