“Behind what could appear as a false debate, there was a real social debate,” said the mayor of La Courneuve, Gilles Poux, in a video. The town has just organized its fourth referendum. This concerned the installation of free public toilets in the city. In all, 2,655 people participated in this referendum, the counting of which took place this Saturday, November 16. And it’s “yes” that wins. In fact, he received 2,196 votes, compared to 449 for “no”.

A referendum which created “a social debate”

Gilles Poux welcomes this result “on two counts”. First of all, he notes that “participation is up by almost 25%”. “We went from 2,100 voters last time to 2,655 this time. This therefore represents real progress. Especially since the deadlines were shorter, since the referendum lasted less time”, underlines the mayor of La Courneuve who is also delighted with the fact that this referendum has created “a social debate on questions of hygiene, public health and rights”.

“I think we did well to organize this debate. Indeed, we didn't really know which way to approach this question of public toilets when it was asked to us, between those who told us that we needed them and those who were opposed to it. Now, we have a vote which represents, I believe, a will which can be considered very largely in the majority in the community,” declares Gilles Poux.

La Courneuve “is going to get to work”

From now on, the City of La Courneuve “will get to work”. “We must, very quickly, be able to make proposals to create the conditions for implementing this decision.” And as the chosen one promises, the emphasis will be on “freeness, safety and cleanliness”. For the moment, it is therefore not specified when or where these public toilets will be installed within the municipality.
