Kremlin says any Trump peace plan for Ukraine must reflect reality on the ground

The Kremlin said any peace plan for Ukraine proposed by a possible future U.S. administration of Donald Trump should reflect the reality on the ground, but that Russian President Vladimir Putin remained open to talks.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that two key advisers to Mr Trump presented him with a plan to end the war in Ukraine – if he wins the presidential election – which involves telling Ukraine it will no longer receive aid. US weapons only if it begins peace talks.

“The value of any plan lies in the nuances and taking into account the real state of affairs on the ground,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters. “We don’t know what type of plan it is or what it contains.

“President Putin has repeatedly said that Russia is and remains open to negotiations, taking into account the real situation on the ground. “We remain open to negotiations and, to evaluate the plan, we must first familiarize ourselves with him.

Mr Peskov said Mr Putin’s recent peace proposals had not been accepted by either the West or Ukraine.

“You know that Putin recently presented a peace initiative which, unfortunately, was not accepted by either the West or the Ukrainians themselves,” he said.
