More than a dozen people, including children and their companions, had to be rushed to a hospital after a school bus crashed Friday afternoon in British Columbia.
“One of the first volunteer firefighters in our district had his own child on that bus. The child suffered broken arms, bruised lungs and other serious injuries. He had to undergo minor surgery and is doing well. [maintenant] “Good,” Cariboo District Fire Chief Roger Hollander told Global News on Saturday.
In total, as many as seven people had to be evacuated by airlift and seven others by ambulance after a school bus, carrying 31 children and four adults, left the road and ended up in a ditch on Friday afternoon.
The group, made up of children aged between 11 and 13, was returning from an overnight excursion to Gavin Lake at the time of the accident, according to the English-speaking media. It is not yet clear what caused the accident to leave the road.
When the first responders arrived, several students were already outside the bus, which apparently suffered the impact at the front of the vehicle. A student, as well as the driver, had to be extricated from the bus before being transported to a hospital.
Despite his injuries, the latter would be “responsive and in communication”, specified the superintendent of school district 27, Chris van der Mark, to Global News.
“[Notre] main objective is the well-being of our students and staff. I am very, very happy to report that those who required medical attention [leurs blessures] were not as serious as they could have been,” he added.
Unfortunately, shortly after the accident, a pedestrian who was nearby was caught in a separate collision and died of his injuries.
