Joao Afonso Pires is on trial from this Monday, June 24 before the Var Assize Court, in Draguignan, for the murder of his partner Iraida, killed by 32 stab wounds, on February 7, 2021.

This tragedy had marked the inhabitants of the Terra Gaïa residence, in the Caïs district of Fréjus. Joao Afonso Pires is on trial from this Monday, June 24 before the Var Assize Court, in Draguignan, for the murder of his partner Iraida, killed with 32 stab wounds, on February 7, 2021, reports Var-Matin. The 43-year-old mother died of injuries to her chest, throat and back.

That day, an argument broke out between the couple, according to what the accused, then 71 years old, told investigators. He allegedly stabbed his wife once in the stomach after receiving a slap from her, then several times when she threw a chair at him, while she was injured. The septuagenarian then tried to flee, before being arrested by neighbors, warned by the couple’s children, who had witnessed part of the scene.

The two boys, aged 11 and 6 at the time, were then left without psychological assistance for 24 hours, despite a request to this effect by the Draguignan public prosecutor, assures the daily.

At least two interventions by the police

Several handrails had been removed by Iraida. The police intervened on at least two occasions, in August 2018 and August 2020, at the family home. A neighborhood survey also showed that the disputes were violent and recurring.

The children, since entrusted to Child Welfare, will be represented by Me Marie Casanova during the trial. Joao Afonso Pires faces life imprisonment. In 2021, 122 femicides were counted by the Ministry of the Interior.
