IQNA-The Administration of Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques announced the death of Saleh al-Shaibi, the 77th guardian of the keys of the Kaaba since the conquest of Mecca, and the 109th guardian of the keys since the time of Qusay bin Kalab , the ancestor of the Prophet (pbuh).

This department said in a statement that Saleh Al-Shaibi died on June 20, 2024, after morning prayers at Masjid al-Haram. The funeral prayer was performed and he was buried at Al-Mu’ala cemetery, at the end of this year’s Hajj season.

Al-Ahram and Al-Nabi mosques offered their condolences following the death of the guardian of the Kaaba key.

According to the Saudi newspaper Sabq, Saleh bin Zain al-Abdin al-Shaibi was born in 1945 into a family that has held the keys to the Kaaba since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Saleh al-Shaibi grew up in Mecca, and continued his studies until obtaining a doctorate in Islamic studies. He worked as a university professor and is the author of numerous books, on religious and historical subjects.

Holding the keys to the Kaaba is the oldest and most honorable profession in the Grand Mosque and Mecca.

In 1435 AH, after the death of his uncle, Abdul Qadir Taha al-Shaibi, this responsibility was given to him and Saleh al-Shaibi supervised the opening of the Kaaba door, perfumed the Kaaba and welcomed its visitors, changed the curtains and washed and maintained the curtains of Baitullah Al-Haram.
