Tielemans scores after 73 seconds against Romania: “The quick goal freed us”

By scoring the Red Devils’ first goal after 73 seconds, Youri Tielemans put Belgium on the right track in the 2-0 victory against Romania at Euro 2024.

Tielemans deceived Florin Nita with a powerful strike at the entrance to the large rectangle to score the fastest goal in the history of Belgium in a major tournament. “We are happy,” Tielemans told RTBF after the meeting. “We suffered even though we could have scored more. This is another point that we must work on to take cover earlier. From the start of the match, we knew that we had to increase the intensity. We have the qualities to make the difference at any time. The quick goal freed us.”

The Devils had to wait until the 80th minute to score the second goal thanks to their captain Kevin De Bruyne while Lukaku had seen his goal canceled a few minutes earlier. “At half-time, we said to ourselves that we had to score quickly but unfortunately, we still had a goal canceled. Finally, a superb action from Koen (Casteels, editor’s note.) and Kevin allowed us to kill the match. For Romelu, it’s important that he scores and creates chances. He just has to be a centimeter lower,” smiled the Aston Villa player.
