The National Agency for Meteorology and Remote Sensing by Satellite (METTELSAT) in the Democratic Republic of Congo has published its seasonal climate forecasts for the months of November 2024 to January 2025, indicating disparities in expected precipitation levels depending on the region, with risks for infrastructure and local populations.
According to the report, above-normal rainfall is forecast in the north and west of the country, mainly affecting the provinces of Nord-Ubangi, Sud-Ubangi, Équateur, Maï-Ndombe, Kwilu, Kwango, Kongo Central, and parts of Ituri and Tanganyika. This increase in precipitation could increase the risk of flooding and landslides in these areas.
Normal rainfall is expected across much of the center of the country, including the cities of Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Kananga, Mbuji-Mayi, Manono, Bunia, Kisangani and Goma. These areas are expected to receive typical rainfall for this time of year.
On the other hand, below-normal precipitation is anticipated in Kasai and parts of Lualaba, with notable deficits in the towns of Kolwezi and Tshikapa. These dry conditions could affect agricultural activities and water supplies in these areas.
METTELSAT warns that these varied climatic conditions require increased vigilance, particularly in areas at risk of flooding and landslides, and recommends preventive measures to mitigate potential impacts on local populations.
