It is this Friday, June 21, that the activities of National Indigenous Peoples Day will be presented. The event will be celebrated at the Sakihikan Center, at Lake Saint-Louis, and for this year’s edition, we aim to share indigenous culture with the entire population.

Different activities are planned from 5 a.m. while the sunrise ceremony will take place. Throughout the day, you will be able to witness the creation of a collective work, a mural, in the form of a painting by numbers. Free canoeing activities as well as cooking game meat on the fire using the traditional method are also planned. Goose and possibly porcupine can be tasted. A Masterchef style bannock preparation competition will also be presented. The competition was a hit, registrations have been completed, as reported by Kim Lesage, director of operations at the La Tuque Native Friendship Center.

A demonstration of traditional drumming and singing will allow you to learn more about this element of Aboriginal culture. Other activities with a cultural flavor will also be offered throughout the day, including a 5 to 7 “tastings and mocktail” and an exhibition of portraits of seniors.

A story and legend activity told by an elder will be presented at 8 p.m. The event will close with the full moon ceremony, an event dedicated to women.

For Ms. Lesage, this day is an excellent opportunity to learn and get closer to indigenous culture.
