Murder of a 3-year-old child in front of the Côtes-d’Armor criminal court: “He is dead, of course I abandoned him”

She became pregnant at 19. Chronic depression, built “on emptiness”, in the words of the clinical psychologist who assessed her for her trial before the Côtes-d'Armor Assize Court. Addicted to The Sims, this board simulation video game from the 2000s, to cannabis and drugs. Uncertain foundations for a future mother, herself an orphan of her own since the age of 11. A time followed by social services during her pregnancy, who said of her “that she was anxious to do well”, Lisa D. gave birth to little Eythan on May 28, 2019.

“I shouted but I quickly gave up the debate”

She will immediately abandon him to all the men who will share his life up to Gaël Scoubart, accused of having killed the little boy, on July 10, 2022, behind the closed doors of their Guingamp apartment. “The role I had to take, I left it to them,” she admits. The mother's apathy was also at the heart of the arguments of this conflicting couple, formed a few months before the tragedy. So does the self-proclaimed authority of the father-in-law. “I saw bruises on my son's back several times,” says Lisa D. We didn't agree on his way of doing things, so I shouted but quickly abandoned the debate. »

I may have done it wrong with him but I thought I would do the best

“But then, you also abandoned your son? », asks the president. “He’s dead, of course I abandoned him,” she replies. She risks 7 years in prison for deprivation of care and failure to assist a person in danger. Gaël Scoubart, 29 years old at the time of the facts, faces life imprisonment. It was he who fed and took Eythan out, as little as this child left his room. He is then an alcoholic, a former heroin addict and on antidepressants. “I may have done it wrong with him but I thought I would do the best I could,” he slips from the dock.

“He was very tough”

On Saturday July 9, 2022, he is the one who takes care of the little one. Lisa D. still sleeps during the day since she spends her nights taking care of virtual characters. “Eythan was very tough that day, more than he had ever been,” says Gaël Scoubart. He admits to having “pushed” the child onto his potty, then to having “taken him by the arm and thrown him on his bed”. “It was the first time I was violent with him,” he assures. The accused also said that the child banged his head against a wall in anger. Still not enough to explain the 67 lesions and bruises that the forensic experts noted on the victim's body.

Eythan was cold in his bed. I was stunned, I didn't understand what was happening

The child was put to bed by the couple on the evening of July 9. He will die, probably during the night, perhaps in the morning of Sunday, too seriously injured by a violent shaking and strangulation. He will be left dead for 12 hours in his bed. “I passed through the room twice during the day, I thought he was sleeping,” says Gaël Scoubart. During this time, he photographed kittens in the apartment and consumed alcohol. And doesn't return to the room until 4 p.m. “Eythan was cold in his bed. I was stunned, I didn’t understand what was happening,” the accused sobbed.

However, he will wait until Lisa D. wakes up, an hour later, to react. ” For what ? », asks Mr Bertrand Faure, counsel for the civil parties. “I disconnected. » “But why, sir? “. “Seeing a child in this state…”. “What condition?” “. “With a bruise…”. “A bruise is not a condition. Tell us what you noticed. That it was cold, this body, and that you knew very well that it was dead. » The accused cries. And the lawyer asks the question that torments the entire courtroom: “You don't think that during all this time, all this day, you could perhaps have saved him? »
